Regarded as the most important and prestigious race on the NASCAR calendar, The Daytona 500 is a 500 mile long NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race held annually at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Daytona 500 has the highest U.S. television ratings for any auto race of the year, surpassing the traditional leader, the Indianapolis 500. Daytona International Speedway is 2.5 miles long and the 500 mile race requires 200 laps to complete. As long as the race is half way completed, 100 laps or 250 miles, it is considered to be official and can be shortened for any reason such as accidents, weather, etc. It has also been extended five times to allow for green-white-checker finish.
